L.C. Bird graduate killed in Afghanistan

Spc. William K. Middleton

Credit: U.S. ARMY

Spc. William K. Middleton was an Old Dominion University graduate who grew up in Richmond.

A Richmond-area native and graduate of L.C. Bird High School was killed Monday in Afghanistan.

Army Spc. William Kyle Middleton, 26, died of wounds he suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in the Kandahar province, the Department of Defense said yesterday.

Another member of Middleton's 101st Airborne unit, Staff Sgt. Sean M. Flannery, 29, of Wyomissing, Pa., also was killed in the attack.

Middleton was born and raised in the Richmond area and graduated from Chesterfield County's Bird High in 2002, his younger brother Zach Middleton said yesterday. The infantryman was a 2007 graduate of Old Dominion University, where he majored in communication and minored in marketing.

"Kyle, he was very participatory in class discussions," recalled professor Carla J. Harrell, who taught him in two communication classes. "He was an involved student and was very pleasant to work with."

Rick Rzepka, a spokesman at Fort Campbell, Ky., where Middleton had been stationed since August 2009, said the fact that he was a college graduate "speaks volumes about his willingness to serve in a very tough job in a very tough fight."

Friends and relatives remember Middleton as a strong individual -- physically and mentally -- and dedicated to the things he set his mind to, passionate about soccer and committed to the Army.

"He knew what he wanted to do and he did this with the possibility that this might happen," longtime friend Tony Wittrien said. "He was just a great guy."

Middleton played soccer growing up and traveled for tournaments, including to Holland when he was 12, his brother said. During his junior year, he studied abroad and played soccer in England.

"He always played soccer, he loved it," the brother said.

Middleton joined the military because he wanted to do something meaningful with his life, said Zach Middleton, who last saw his brother when he drove him to Fort Campbell in June, weeks before his brother deployed.

The family worried when he deployed, but the soldier did not show signs of concern.

"He wanted to get in there and see some action," Zach Middleton said.

Middleton was an infantryman assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in April 2009 and arrived at Fort Campbell in August 2009. This was Middleton's first deployment, Rzepka said.

His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Air Assault Badge and Combat Infantryman Badge.

In addition to his brother, Middleton is survived by his father, Clarence Middleton of Amelia, and mother, Marlene Blackburn of Richmond. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial service arrangements have not been finalized.
